The Triumph of Corporate America Essay
The Triumph of Corporate America Essay The Triumph of Corporate America Essay The Triumph of Corporate America Some of the largest corporations in America are connected to each other in more ways than one, like the fast food industry. It purchases their products from large companies that are in the food marketing business such as meat or potato production. Thatââ¬â¢s no big surprise since the fast food business makes food and in order to make food they have to obtain it from somewhere else. But there is more common ground than just buying products from one another, ââ¬Å"[those industries] were started by door-to-door salesmen, short-order cooks, orphans, and dropouts, by eternal optimists looking for a piece of the next big thingâ⬠(22). They were the next door neighbor who had a crazy, wonderful idea that would change America and its culture. The fast food industry has become a national icon of the American culture that is known throughout the world. The reason it has become widely known can be narrowed down to one corporation, the McDonalds Corpora tion. Over the years its mass marketing techniques have been able to makes its golden arches recognized by kids all over the world and even more so in the U.S. ââ¬Å"A survey of American school children found that 96 percent could identify Ronald McDonald. The only fictional character with a higher degree of recognition was Santa Clausâ⬠(4). The way the company has been able to become acknowledged by so many people, both adult and children, is by advertising. They use all sort of commercials to try and lure in potential customers, but the best way, as they have learned, to get a new client is to get them when they are young. They believe that a ââ¬Å"persons ââ¬Ëbrand loyaltyââ¬â¢ may begin as early as the age of twoâ⬠(43). In order to do that, most of the commercial they do are designed to catch the attention of young kids watching T.V. on a Saturday morning. Isnââ¬â¢t it just lovely that the McDonald Corporation targets children to become their client, mak ing them think that their food is great and trying to win their hearts with the help of a happy clown? Not to mention that they study children in order to see what they like and then proceed to put it in their advertisements. It is wonderful to see the industry take an interest in children, isnââ¬â¢t it? One of the ways the large corporations have been able to be at the top for so long is by ââ¬Å"helpingâ⬠other smaller companies join their large industry or by using other methods. Just ââ¬Å"imagine how the New York Stock Exchange would function if large investors could keep the terms of all their stock trades secret. Ordinary investors would have no idea what their own stocks [are] really worth ââ¬â a fact that wealthy traders could easily exploitâ⬠(138). This is how the top meat corporations do business with other smaller groups that are in the same line of work as them. They monopolize the meatpacking industry and then buy cattle from local ranchers at price s extremely low, which ultimately lead many ranchers into bankruptcy. But the great thing about the large meatpacking enterprises is that they are so kind and nice they will buy the cattle farm, and all its territory, from the bankrupt rancher and let him work for them. What a deal, to let that man become part of their company. But sadly some of those men donââ¬â¢t take that deal and they move away, get a different job, and try to repay the debt that they accumulated over the years by trying to keep their farm alive. Anyways, those big companies sure do know do to make a deal. Another way the top industries of fast food and meat packaging save money is by employing people that are in need of money. It is really nice of them to give jobs to people who really need the extra cash like migrants and teenagers. They also

Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Allan Poe
Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Allan Poe The story of ââ¬Å"The Cask of Amontilladoâ⬠by Edgar Allan Poe is full of conflict from beginning to end. The narrator of this story does not reveal why such a conflict exists other than to say someone has impugned his honor. Poe makes use of irony, symbolism among other linguistics means to tell a revenge story under Montresorââ¬â¢s, the murderer, view and ideas. Even knowing the narrator is not reliable and he probably is mad, the reader stands on his side from the beginning to the end of the conflict. This article will try to analyze the tools used by Poe to create this short story. The Style of Poe in ââ¬Å"The cask of amontilladoâ⬠Strengthening readersââ¬â¢ comprehension of his writing is also a key function of the imagery Poe uses. The variety of stylistic devices used by Poe to create the atmosphere of horror and terror includes the setting, one of the things the author uses to paint a dark and gloomy picture in the readerââ¬â¢s mind. For example: as de scribed by him in the beginning of the short story ââ¬Å"It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival seasonà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦Ã¢â¬ or like in this paragraph: ââ¬Å"At the most remote end of the crypt there appeared another less spacious. Its walls had been lined with human remains, piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris. Three sides of this interior crypt were still ornamented in this manner. From the fourth side the bones had been thrown down, and lay promiscuously upon the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size. Within the wall thus exposed by the displacing of the bones, we perceived a still interior crypt or recess, in depth about four feet, in width three, in height six or seven. It seemed to have been constructed for no especial use within itself, but formed merely the interval between two of the colossal supports of the roof of the catacombs, and was backed by one of their circumscribing walls of so lid graniteâ⬠. Imagery in Poeââ¬â¢s style of writing clearly involves readers in the story, and his use of complex vocabulary ensures that readers understand his themes and implications. The use of symbolism is what makes Poeââ¬â¢s short story even more interesting. Symbolism, according to the The Dictionary of Literary Terms, is an object, person, idea, etc. used in a literary work, film, etc., to stand for or suggest something else with which it is associated either explicitly or in some more subtle way. It may not be clear for some readers, but in ââ¬Å"The Cask of Amontilladoâ⬠the fight between two social class conflict and the aristocratic social codes is very well pictured. Montresor meets Fortunato ââ¬Å"as if by chanceâ⬠when it is clear that Montresor already of Fortunatoââ¬â¢s attendance during the Carnival celebration at a banquet. When Montresor leads the intoxicated Fortunato into the blind wall in the subterranean passages of Montresorââ¬â ¢s family grave and takes him prisoner, he already has mortar and trowel prepared for walling up his victim. Since Fortunato had given Montresor a Masonic sign and asked him if he were a Mason, a question which response was that Fortunato was nothing more than a real stone mason and the murderer laughingly showed the real trowel he had with him, it can also be a humorous imitation of the French Freemasonry, whose motto was ââ¬Å"libertà ©, à ©galità ©, fraternità ©.ââ¬

Recombinant Art Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Recombinant Art - Essay Example 23 Mar. 2009 ). From oulipo to recombinant poetics Interaction with different forms of generative production enables one to dynamically explore emergent meaning. New forms of computer-based art can make it possible for participants to actively become engaged in aspects of the production of the work. Each "user" of a specifically authored computer-mediated system may have a quite different experience emerging through interaction. Yet, emergent systems can also be analogue in nature. There is an interesting commonality to generative literary, artistic, and musical production that is relevant to the OULIPO, Recombinant Poetics, as well as techno-audio remix culture. In the following, I will compare and contrast approaches to combinatorics from the perspective of each of these fields of research. OULIPO (Ouvroir de litrature potentielle - The Workshop for Potential Literature) "does not want to be considered a literary school, or to overtly advance specific ideologies or theories, its goals portray an understanding of literature that merits outline and critique". In his illuminating book entitled OULIPO - A Primer of Potential Literature, Warren F. Motte, Jr., outlines the history of OULIPO, which was conceived at the initiative of Raymond Queneau and Franois Le Lionnais: It was born...

Abstraction Reaction Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1
Abstraction Reaction - Assignment Example My expectation changed throughout the project because I gathered confidence as I progressed with the activity. Initially, I doubted I whether I could make a rational sketch without looking at the paper. However, I was surprised of the sketch that I produced after the project because the figure was excellent. Interestingly, I realized that I positioned some of the components of my subject accurately in my sketch. Abstract sketches promote creativity because they provide the artist with the opportunity of employing a diverse range of expressions. This is because abstract sketches should not necessarily represent reality. Moreover, abstract sketches are more personal because they provide a person with an approach of seeing more into a specific artistââ¬â¢s psyche (Cramer 28). I liked the experience after realizing a wonderful collage that I was able to make after the project. The project provided me with good experience that developed my skills. I was conscious about my original subject throughout my sketching activity. For example, I utilized information from my source material when designing an outline of my work. This included using the material in determining the size, and the appropriate color to apply at each section of my work. My expectations increased as I progressed with the project. This is because successful completion of each activity motivated me into working more on the piece in order to make it better. This because I realized I had the potential of producing a masterpiece as I progressed with the project. In abstract sketches, artists can describe all values and concepts that they have about the world in a single sketch. Furthermore, abstract sketches are visually powerful because they combine many aspects of art including color, texture, composition and

Elie Wiesels Night and Alicia Appleman-Jurmans Alicia :: Elie Wiesel Night Essays
ElieWiesel's Night and Alicia Appleman-Jurman's Alicia à Wars between groups of people over race, religion, and beliefs have been fought throughout human history. Millions of people have been killed simply because of what they look like, whom they worship, how they live, and what they believe in general. However, it was not until after Hitler's Holocaust that the terms "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing" - the systematic destruction of entire groups of people for petty and irrational reasons - came into use. Hitler's holocaust was different than all of the wars fought for cultural reasons that came before the Holocaust. The Nazis did not wish to simply subdue the Jews, oppress them, and try to force their beliefs upon them. Instead, Hitler and the Nazis wanted nothing less than the complete annihilation of the Jews, and everything related to Judaism. Hitler's campaign against the Jews was hardly a war. Rarely did the killers encounter large, armed and organized bodies of Jewish soldiers. Rather, the Nazis encountered largely defe nseless ordinary people: women, businessmen, farmers, and the elderly. Most vulnerable of all the victims were the children. On the weakest members of society, the Nazis showed perhaps the least mercy. à Children are always less suited for physical hardship than all but the frailest of adults. Children can not travel on foot long distances, go without food, or resist disease as well as adults. Clearly, this made them extremely vulnerable to the will of the Nazis during World War II. They could not endure the long death marches, starvation, and disease inflicted upon them by the Nazis as well as adults could. As a result, in a purely physical sense, the Holocaust must have been far more torturous to children than to adults. à Often, the Nazis specifically targeted children. Upon his arrival at Auschwitz, ElieWiesel was told to lie about his age by a Jew already imprisoned there. If he had given his real age, fifteen, he would have likely been immediately sent to the gas chambers. Instead, by saying he was eighteen, he was spared immediate death in order to be put to work (Wiesel 28). Shortly thereafter, Wiesel witnessed "a lorry ...at the pit and [delivering] it's load - little children.
